TECHNOLOGY
Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) technology is a cornerstone of advanced defense imaging systems, delivering critical capabilities for surveillance, target detection, and data collection. Operating in the wavelength range of 3 to 5 µm, MWIR cameras are particularly adept at long-range detection, with the ability to detect objects up to 2.5 times further than Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) cameras under specific conditions. MWIR systems are less sensitive to atmospheric influences compared to LWIR, making them exceptionally effective in environments with challenging visibility and weather conditions. Their high sensitivity to temperature differences allows them to excel at detecting high-temperature targets, such as engines or missiles, where strong thermal contrast enhances imaging performance. MWIR cameras are an invaluable asset in scenarios requiring precision and reliability in dynamic environments.
One of the key advantages of MWIR technology is its performance in low temperature contrast environments. Our MWIR cameras are particularly effective at detecting and distinguishing objects with minimal different temperatures, making them ideal for tracking thermal signatures of vehicles, ships, aircrafts and personnel. This capability is critical for surveillance operations both at sea and on land, where identifying and tracking of moving targets is essential.
In maritime environments, for example, Nedinsco’s MWIR cameras are used to detect vessels and obstacles that may be difficult to spot with visible light cameras, especially during nighttime or adverse weather conditions. Their ability to provide high-contrast images, even in complex scenes, enhances situational awareness and operational effectiveness.

To maximize their effectiveness, MWIR cameras are often integrated into multi-spectral imaging systems alongside other sensors, such as daylight (VIS) and Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR). This integration allows for a comprehensive analysis of the combat environment by collection and combining data from the different spectra. The result is a richer, more detailed image that enhances decision-making and operational planning.
